Message from Director General

 

Dear Reader and Customer; Welcome to the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA).

TPA is a corporate body established under the Ports Act No. 17 of 2004 as a landlord port authority. It operates a system of ports serving the Tanzania hinterland and the landlocked countries of Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, Rwanda, Malawi and Uganda. Other countries using Tanzania Ports are Zimbabwe, South Sudan and Comoro.

TPA administers a diverse system of Tanzania’s Mainland Sea and Inland waterways (Lake Ports). Dar es salaam is a hub and enter port. The major sea ports are Tanga and Mtwara while smaller sea ports are Kilwa, Lindi, Mafia, Nyamisati, Kisiju, Bagamoyo, and Pangani. The Lake Ports include Mwanza Noth and South Ports, Nansio, Kemondo Bay, Bukoba and Musoma on the Lake Victoria; Kigoma and Kasanga on Lake Tanganyika and Itungi Port, Kiwira, Manda Liuli and Mbamba Bay on Lake Nyasa.

Currently, the Authority performs the role of both a Landlord and Operator with the main objective of promoting effective management and operations of sea and inland waterways ports, provision of services in relation to loading and unloading of cargo and passenger services, developing, promoting, and managing port infrastructure and superstructure, maintaining port safety and security. Dar es Salaam port is East Africa’s main gateways to International Trade (import and export). TPA currently operates and manages all Ports (Sea & Lake) in the United Republic of Tanzania (mainland) and it remains as a key industrial player in the transport sector, the main gateway, and most important the East African Regional hub for maritime trade. Our main obligation is to accomplish the uppermost values of our services when delivering cargo services to our customers and to guarantee safety and efficiency by providing state-of-the-art services acquired from timely customer services, the latest port equipment’s, port infrastructure, and friendly ICT systems.

TPA is currently embarking on big projects in port expansion and development. The upgrading and developing of Dar es Salaam Port through the Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway Project (DMGP) will allow us to increase water depth to 14.5 m, widening of entrance channel and construction of new specialized motor vehicle berth (ro-ro). Further investment is being made to construct new general cargo berth at Port of Mtwara with a quay length of 300 m with 13 m water depth. These investments will further increase the Port’s capacity to handle more cargo.

TPA is determined to forge ahead, focusing on contributing to the Industrial growth policy spearheaded by the Sixth Government under President Hon. Samia Suluhu Hassan. Our long-term plan is to see growth in the containers business, general cargo, and oil and gas business with emphasize on Hoima-Tanga Port pipeline crude oil business and Bagamoyo Port. Customer Service delivery is never compromised. The standard of our customer services is elevated through the quality of our work and measured through our Customer Service Chatter.
